Imsys Releases Internet Ready High-Performance Java Platform

Stockholm, Sweden, January 30, 2003. Imsys launches a new high-performance and Internet ready Simple Networking Application Platform, SNAP. The SNAP module is a complete hardware and software platform for quick application development. It includes multiple industry standard interfaces for local devices as well as TCP/IP protocols and 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet for remote access. The module also integrates a certified Sun Microsystems J2ME-CLDC run-time environment, thus providing a standard platform for embedded Java products. SNAP uses the standard SIMM 72-pin form factor and is compatible to socket boards supporting the popular TINI® standard.

"SNAP is about twenty times faster than compatible products, which opens new possibilities for developers of, for instance, building management systems, industrial automation, plant monitoring and other products that are remotely controlled and monitored over Internet or LAN" says Stefan Löf, Imsys Director of sales and marketing.

In addition to the Ethernet interface there are three UARTs with speeds up to 460 kbit/s, dual 1-Wire interfaces, high-speed I2C, 125kb - 1Mb/s CAN-bus and several general purpose I/O. The onboard memory is 2MB flash and 8MB DRAM, which allows operation of demanding application software. SNAP is also equipped with a real time clock and calendar.

The high performance of the SNAP module is achieved through the use of a patented Imsys processor, which executes Java byte codes directly. The internal instruction clock speed is also several times higher than that of compatible products.

The advanced user, in need of writing native functions, can connect SNAP via a trace adapter to a PC based Integrated Development Environment, IDE. Through Imsys IDE, the developer can handle a mix of Java, C, and assembler code. The tools included are source code editors, on-line manuals and help system, C-compiler, assembler, linker, loader and trace/debug tools. Also available is an advanced simulator that allows application software to be traced and executed without the need for a hardware target.

The combination of SNAP as a product platform and the advanced development environment ensures faster time to market and enables new demanding high performance applications. An open reference design provides easy integration of SNAP functionality into cost optimised systems.

SNAP is available now for volume shipments and the single quantity price is US $128. The SNAP IDE is US $450 for a single license.
