Imsys IM3200

Overview

The new IM3200 represents a remarkable shift in computing. It combines the best features of traditional CISC architectures with FPGA flexibility. The built-in DSP and Java acceleration is tightly integrated in the rich instruction set.

With its rating of 25 Mbit/s sustained TCP/IP communication on less than 100 mW running at 200 MHz the IM3200 offers the best performance/energy ratio in the industry. The efficiency can be even more finely tuned using several power saving modes. Besides the efficient use of power, the device offers precise, IEEE 1588 time stamping and a crypto unit enabling secure communication

The IM3200 is designed for maximum network throughput, power efficiency and functionality. Its instruction set extensions provide semantically richer instructions reducing the size and power consumption of the application program memory. Architectural advancements on efficiency in communications have led to the abolishment of at all kinds of data and instruction cache memories normally found in similar devices.

Block Diagram

The diagram shows the main parts of the processor. The microcode enables acceleration of CPU intensive tasks with orders of magnitude. By coding functions like encryption, TCP/IP checksum calculation and time stamping etc, the processor can handle tasks not seen in comparable products. The Crypto unit supports random number generation, RSA key generation and storage. The software controlled PLL and power management units help the processor achieve outstanding efficiency numbers.

IEEE 1588 Time Stamping support

The real-time clock on chip has been extended for the support of the IEEE 1588 standard. The local precise time can be used both by software and directly by external hardware through the GPIO ports. The time presentation to the external is very precise, since it has no jitter caused by instruction execution.
