Answers

1.1 Is UNIX supported?

The firmware package located at the download area can be used under both UNIX and Microsoft Windows to develop applications.

However, to install the firmware the first time on the SNAP a special "firmware loader" must be run, and this loader currently only works under Microsoft Windows.

1.2 What is needed to start developing?

To be able to develop applications you need:

A SNAP module
A SNAP or TINI socket board
The SNAP firmware (see download area)
Sun's JDK (see JDK download)
A power supply for the socket board
A (straight) serial cable
An ethernet connection between your computer and the socket board.
If you already have an application for TINI and would like to see if it is possible to compile it, download the latest firmware package. The firmware package contains the complete build environment.

2.1 Is the SNAP hardware compatible to TINI?

Yes it is. It has been tested with several socket boards.

The following have been tested:

Taylec Mini-T
Taylec Tutor-I/O
Taylec TINITutor
Systronix TILT
Systronix STEP
Systronix TILT400Lite
Systronix TILT400Pro
Dallas E20 socket board

(If you know any additional boards, please report it to support@imsystech.com.)

2.2 Why doesn't the serial4 connector on my TILT400Pro work with SNAP?

If you purchased a TILT400Pro board board before May 2005, or if you bought it from somewhere else than our web shop, the serial4 connector does not work with SNAP. This is easily fixed, see the TILT400 serial4 application note for details.

3.1 Is the SNAP software compatible to TINI?

No, not to 100%. The TINI is based on a subset of Sun's JDK 1.1.8 (J2SE), while the SNAP JVM is based on Sun's CLDC specification 1.0. However, some additional packages have been added to simplify the porting of applications (such as javax.comm, java.net and com.dalsemi.onewire). Download the latest firmware package to see what is supported.

4.1 If I can't find the answer here, what can I do?

If your question isn't answered here, try searching the mailinglist.

4.2 What kind of support is available?

The technical documentation pubished is available here. Additional information may be found in the mailing list archive. To be able to send questions to the mailinglist you must subscribe to it. The mailinglist is read and answered by our engineers.

4.3 How much does the SNAP module cost?

See the sales section for more information.
